Together, Red and Blue Make Purple

PROJECT STATEMENT

Together, Red and Blue Make Purple (Crayons) is an interactive installation where visitors are encouraged to participate in a collaborative drawing. Participants work together to pick up the crayons and color, as if coloring in a coloring page without the lines. The crayons are intentionally broken and linked together making it too heavy and cumbersome for one person to lift alone. This playful challenge encourages participants to communicate, work together, and embrace both failure and persistence to draw on the large sheets of paper spread across the floor.

As the paper fills with colorful, overlapping marks, it is hung on the wall, gradually transforming the space into something that resembles a refrigerator covered with children’s drawings. Over time, these layers of marks create an evolving story of interaction and shared effort.

Whether participating or observing, everyone becomes part of the work. Those who join in will discover how teamwork unlocks new possibilities, while observers can witness the gradual emergence of a visual language through play. Ultimately, this piece invites adults to reconnect with curiosity and wonder—reminding us that the joy of playful creation belongs to all ages, not just childhood.
