Sink or Swim

EXBIBITION STATEMENT
This body of work explores themes of memory, introspection, and transformation, with materials serving as conduits for expression. These pieces allow me to work through emotions that are sometimes difficult to articulate, becoming a way to translate feelings into physical forms. By repeatedly reworking objects, I engage in a meditative process that mirrors the cyclical nature of thought.
Influenced by my background, I incorporate objects like bathing suits, non-slip tiles, and swimming strokes. Through methods such as mold-making, casting, and mark-making, I reframe these items, bringing forth imagery rooted in everyday forms. Rather than creating new symbols, I work to reveal what exists within these materials, transforming them through a “one-to-one translation” that captures their essence rather than their exact likeness.
There’s a fascination in my work with the sensation of suspension—how moments of tension can transition into calm. This theme emerges as I layer materials to evoke the tranquil space between body and water, a symbolic reflection on navigating emotions and memory. My hope is for the viewer to find a moment of contemplation within these objects, a quiet pause in the presence of life’s currents.
